The article deals with Synes. Hymn 1,385-548, the thematic relevance of which to the poem has been called in question. Inner consistency and the close links between these verses and the rest of the hymn are highlighted. A polemic reference to the Eunomians at 254-265 seems to point out a common terminus post quem for 1-370 and 428-503. Synesius’ embassy in Constantinopleis brought in to clarify passages about his thanksgiving to God (8-11, 70-1, 395-405). Thus the poem serves also as a defense of Synesius’ deeds, depicting them as providential and providing a philosophical portrait of the poet.
