In his defence of the genuine tradition of the Bible against vernacular translations, Pachomius Rhusanus (1508-1544) offers many interesting considerations about the evolution of ancient Greek and the grammatical tradition. His remarks, part of the defence of Orthodox Christianity against Islam, are useful for the studies of Greek dialectology and language history. For Rhusanus, translations of the Bible are a new confusion of languages, more harmful than Babel’s, whereas the original Bible is like a literary Pentecost; and maintaining that requires knowledge of both grammar and tradition.
