The article addresses the way modal particles accompanying optative verbs are distributed in the Iliad. Textual data is analyzed by specimina, in order to re-examine the issue concerning the alternation between ἄν and κε(ν) by taking under consideration dialect, metrics, phonetics and syntax aspects as well as the overall frame story and the expressive and stylistic needs of Homeric poetry.
