All’inizio del X secolo d.C una guerra durata sette anni pose fine all’emirato aghlabita del Maghreb orientale (Ifriqya), formalmente sottomesso al califfato di Baghdad e quindi appartenente all’Islam ortodosso (sunnita) e portò all’instaurazione del califfato rivale ismailita; le vicende relative sono oggi abbastanza ben note grazie a fonti originali ismailite solo recentemente emerse dagli archivi e tradotte in lingue europee; queste gettano non poca luce anche sugli eserciti del mondo islamico occidentale dell’epoca e sul loro modo di combattere anche se, naturalmente, non mancano le lacune e le domande in attesa di risposta. At the beginning of the X century a.C. a seven years war put an end to the aghlabite emirate of eastern Maghreb (Ifriqya), formally belonging to the Baghdad caliphate and therefore to Sunni Islam, and brought about the emergence of the rival ismailite caliphate; the related events are now known in some detail mostly thanks to original ismailite sources that only recently emerged from the archives and were translated into european languages; these sources also throw some light on the armies of the western islamic world of that period and on their kind of warfare, even if, of course, many questions still remain.
