The construction of underground works in urban
environments presents complex engineering challenges, particularly in
predicting ground induced settlements and evaluating potential damage to
existing structures within the excavation’s influence zone, as well as
in managing these induced effects through appropriate mitigation
measures. The analysed case study of a metro line project involves
several complexities: stringent spatial constraints within narrow urban
corridors, existing structures, tramlines, and vehicular traffic which
require unconventional design solutions, such as alternating vertically
stacked and horizontally adjacent tunnels. Situated within a geological
context marked by soft soils and high hydraulic loads, the alignment
underscores the need to employ advanced risk analysis tools. The
presented study develops the Building Risk Assessment through the use of
SYSTRA S.p.A. “Digital Project Urban Tool,” with the aim of identifying
areas where ground improvement works should be designed, thus
safeguarding the urban structural and infrastructural heritage.
