In nat. 4b.3.1-4 Seneca discusses hail’s formation and points out a question of scientific methodology. He argues with historians and the philosopher Posidonius, supporting his claim with analogical evidence gathered from the obviousness of experience. He quotes verses by Ovid (ars 1.475-476) and Lucretius (1.313), that prove as sententia a universally accepted empirical truth.
